The Hot Overseas Market: Is Your Business Right for Import/Export?

It’s an exciting time for business because so many foreign markets are open now that weren’t even ten years ago. Russia, Germany, even China, have all opened their doors to American products and services with an eye toward making money. That’s good news for the entrepreneurs who furnish the goods.

Exporting your goods isn’t quite as simple as selling door to door, however. A considerable amount of research is necessary to ensure that your decision to deal overseas is an intelligent one.

Some basic questions to answer: Does your product have a place overseas? If so, where? Look for those areas where competition has not yet set in. Be sure your product fits in nicely with the culture you’re considering. If, for example, you manufacture bicycle gears, look carefully at places like Scandinavia or China, where bicycles are the primary mode of transportation. These are the proper markets for you, not ones where people either walk or drive or use boats to get around.

Before shoveling out thousands of dollars on airfare to visit the places you think you might want to do business, call the Department of Commerce and get their mailing list of representatives who live in other countries. If you contact them first, they can alert you to the pros and cons of the place and help you know whether you’re on the right track. Also, the Export Small Business Development Center, a nonprofit organization that’s both state and federally funded, offers free advice from consultants who know the ropes and can prevent you from tying yourself up in knots before taking the big plunge.

The U.S. Export Assistance Center, One World Trade Center Drive, Suite 1670, Long Beach, CA 90831, (310) 980-4550, pro-vided the following information and can send you a detailed brochure about these and other valuable resources.

U.S. Export Assistance Centers (USEAC)

This organization works with state, local, public, and private organizations as well as with federal agencies such as the U.S. Department of Commerce (USDC), the Export-Import Bank of the U.S., the U.S. Agency for International Development, and the U.S. Small Business Administration. The USEAC coordinates and leverages all available resources to help businesses increase exports and compete in the global marketplace. Counseling is available for busi-nesspeople as well. Marketing specialists can assist in identifying and penetrating new international markets.
